Muravera

Situated in the south-east of Sardinia in the province of Cagliari, Muravera is the most important holiday resort in the Sarrabus area and has developed locally a sort of mixed economy, based on agriculture and seaside tourism.
Its population currently stands at 4.650 but it was first built in Roman times in the Flumendosa river valley.
The surrounding areas have been inhabited since more distant times, as the numerous megalithic remains in the area go to prove, including the 22 perfectly aligned menhirs at Piscina Rei. Since this territory is situated along the coast, it was often subject to foreign domination, including the periods of Pisan and Aragonese rule, interspersed with raids carried out by Moorish pirates. It was on account of these raids that the numerous look-out and defence towers were built along the coast.
The success and fame enjoyed in recent years, however, is primarily due to the wonderful Costa Rei beach that stretches for miles.
One of the most important festivals held in Muravera is the Citrus fruit Festival , that takes place in March. Its main attractions are the stands where you can try typical local products and the colourful procession of “traccas” (carts, drawn by oxen). In summer they also hold a wine festival, a honey festival and a handicrafts exhibition.
